Flagship Project 2: R2DATO - Rail to Digital automated up to autonomous train operation

FP2-R2DATO aims to address the growing demand for transportation by leveraging digitalization and automation in the rail industry. FP2-R2DATO stands for "Future Project 2 - Rail 2 Digital Automation and Train Operation." Its main objective is to enhance the capacity of existing rail networks by developing and implementing advanced technologies.

One of the key focuses of FP2-R2DATO is the development of the next generation of Automatic Train Control (ATC) systems. These systems utilize digitalization and automation to enable scalable digital and automatic train operations. This means that trains can operate autonomously or with minimal human intervention, leading to improved efficiency and increased capacity.

The project aims to achieve tangible results by 2025 in several key areas. These include Automatic Train Operation (ATO), which involves automating train control functions, and ETCS (European Train Control System) hybrid level 3 and level 3 moving block, which are advanced signaling and control systems. FP2-R2DATO also incorporates digital technologies like 5G connectivity and a standardized onboard Information and Communication Technology (ICT) platform.

Furthermore, the project aims to develop guidelines and methods for the rapid and cost-effective deployment and migration of digital and automatic train operation capabilities throughout Europe. By implementing these technical improvements, FP2-R2DATO intends to align with the objectives and impacts defined in Europe's Rail Master Plan and Annual Work Programme. This includes contributing to increased punctuality, reliability, and productivity of staff, rolling stock, and infrastructure within the rail industry.

While striving to achieve its goals, FP2-R2DATO acknowledges potential risks and challenges. These include accepting automated systems by the public, synchronizing the project with the ongoing deployment of the ETCS system, and addressing potential legal issues that may arise from introducing new technologies and operational practices.

In summary, FP2-R2DATO is a project that aims to enhance the capacity and efficiency of rail networks by leveraging digitalization and automation. By implementing advanced technologies like ATO, ETCS, and digital connectivity, the project seeks to improve the overall performance of the rail industry while considering potential risks and challenges.
