EcoLogic - Towards sustainable construction logistics with a real-time Carbon Digital Twin

The project EcoLogic (Emission COntrol and Logistics Optimization for Green Infrastructure Construction) is an ambitious undertaking, aiming to make the Dutch construction logistics sector more sustainable and resilient by leveraging advanced IoT, AI, and real-time Carbon Digital Twin technologies.
The ECOLOGIC project has been funded by the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure & Water Management (supported by TKI Dinalog) and is part of the Knowledge and Innovation Program for Emission-Free Building 2021-2023.
Partners involved are: University of Twente (EEMCS/PS) BAM, BouWatch, CAPE Groep, Datacadabra, Hegeman-Nijverdal, and Pioneering.

Sublime - Increasing the reliability and circularity of large steel infrastructures

Large steel infrastructures (bridges, sheet piles, lock doors) degrade in time through corrosion and fatigue. The goals of this project are to increase the reliability and circularity of these infrastructures and to develop governance recommendations that operationalize the technical knowledge.
Predictive digital twins will be developed that integrate structural health monitoring and prediction models. This enables a much longer – but safe – use of these infrastructures. The consequent socioeconomic and environmental benefits will be assessed as well, and this unique combination of scientific expertise will result in specific technical and governance recommendations to achieve sustainable and reliable steel infrastructures. Partners in the consortium include Eindhoven University of Technology, TNO, Delft University of Technology, Rijkswaterstaat, ProRail, Province of South Holland, City of Amsterdam, North Sea Port (NL), North Sea Port (Belgium), ArcelorMittal, Inertia Technology, Bouwen met Staal, Madastar, Dutch Drone Company, and Somni.

Smart Connected Bikes - Making cycling more enjoyable and safe.

Bicycle manufacturing currently falls behind the rapid technological developments in automotive industries. We propose to design, develop and test a smart cycling eco-system where bicycles communicate in real-time with each other, and with the urban transport infrastructure (e.g. traffic lights) to optimize the use and improve traffic safety, economical value, and efficiency.
The programme is a collaboration between the University of Twente, Accell Group, TNO, Delft University of Technology and Saxion University of Applied Sciences.

Zorro - Preventing malfunctions with artificial intelligence

The Zorro project (Zero downtime in Cyber-physical systems) is dealing with Digital Twin technology and methodology to address the reliability and robustness of large-scale cyber physical systems (CPS). While Intelligent Diagnostics have shown successes on small components, ZORRO aims to scale up this technology to tackle the sheer complexity of cyber-physical systems. In this project we will focus on the design and development of robust and system level monitoring as an integral part of the CPS, by including: robust monitoring at the levels of hardware, software, and algorithms; systems-of-systems monitoring at component, inter-component, and system levels; meta-monitoring, i.e., monitoring the monitoring system itself; and embedded intelligence enabling inference for diagnostics and shortening the data acquisition/analysis/feedback loop.

Arise - Getting insight into the biodiversity of the Netherlands

Biodiversity loss is one of the biggest threats to the survival of humanity. Therefore, there is an urgent need for better tools to monitor biodiversity. That is what the ARISE project aims to achieve: the construction of an infrastructure, the only one of its kind in the world, to identify and monitor all species of multicellular flora and fauna in the Netherlands. The Netherlands Research Council (NWO), University of Twente, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, University of Amsterdam and the Fungal Biodiversity Institute Westerdijk are building the infrastructure to realise this ambition.
The UT is collaboratively designing and building the fundamental backbone architecture for ARISE and the digital species identification (DSI) pipeline. The UT builds services that support developing and deploying AI algorithms that detect and identify species from various digital media such as sound, images, and radar. The DSI team is responsible for the design and implementation of a scalable end-to-end AI algorithm training, evaluation, and sharing platform.

H2OforAll - make water safer - Innovative drinking water disinfection

Purification and disinfection are vital processes for making water safe. The problem is, when certain disinfectants, such as chlorine, react with organic matter in water, the by-products are anything but safe themselves. If people consume them, we know they can have serious effects on the liver and nervous system, and they cause environmental damage, even at low levels. Furthermore, the full effects of disinfection by-products (DBPs) are not fully understood, they may be more harmful than we realise.
Against this background, the three year H2OforAll project, funded through Horizon Europe, is working to develop new tools and technologies to protect and treat drinking water, to keep it free from DBPs. The project involves the development of fast, accurate and cost effective monitoring devices to detect the presence of DBPs, as well as techniques to model their spread through water distribution systems. In the H20forAll project, the Pervasive Systems group will work on the development of cost-effective sensor monitoring devices to detect DBPs, employing spectrometry and advanced AI/machine learning techniques for more accurate detection of contaminants.

In PrimaVera, we create value by transforming the collected data from intelligent systems into predictions about the system’s health, by avoiding future failures through just-in-time maintenance, by doing maintenance exactly when and where needed, according to the specific needs of the system and according to its specification.
By using a holistic approach to the maintenance workflow, the team will develop accurate, scalable, and real-time health diagnostics and prognostics and turn these into effective maintenance strategies that can operate in complex and uncertain environments. Thereby, making major steps in realizing the promises of predictive maintenance: better system performance at lower costs.
While the building blocks for predictive maintenance, such as sensor technology, data analytics, and optimization exist, key elements for the successful implementation of predictive maintenance are still missing: accurate prognostic and optimization algorithms, their scalability, and especially their integration and automation.

FREE photons - Optical Wireless Superhighways at home and in space

In the Perspective program ‘Optical Wireless Superhighways’, a powerful new option for creating the booming world of wireless communication services at all length scales will be explored by means of steerable optical beams in free-space.
The application domains range from ultra-long reach (e.g., inter-satellite, ground-to-satellite, airplane-to-satellite), medium-range (outdoor like for instance between tall buildings, 5G+ masts), to short-reach (indoor like for instance inside homes, class rooms, exhibition halls, conference halls, and aircraft cabins). In comparison to fiber links, optical beams not only offer more capacity, but also have less latency (i.e. less propagation time) which amongst others benefits machine-to-machine communication. They do not need an expensive infrastructure and offer freedom of movement. Furthermore no radio spectrum licensing is required. Within the program, our focus will be on resilient free-space satellite networking.

Power4fitfoot - Preventing diabetic foot

Power4FitFoot aims to support cardiovascular patients with diabetic foot. Power4FitFoot follows a multidisciplinary development approach: researchers (medicine, computer and behavioural sciences) work together with patients, caregivers and industrial companies to develop personalized self-management products and services to prevent Diabetic Foot Ulcers or amputations. Real-time sensor data analytics and big data are the key ingredients in our approach. The result will be an early warning system on risk detection of deterioration, with feedback and coaching. We work with several partners on this project, these are: ZGT, Thales, DIAVASC, Wender and Reggeborgh.

The Youngsters - Supporting young farm animals

This project investigates how a combination of different sensor methods and artificial intelligence technologies, which can detect behavior (including interaction), position, activity, weight, temperature and heart rate on or in the environment of young piglets and calves, can provide insight. The aim is to gain more insight into the welfare of young animals (newly born calves and piglets) and to use that knowledge to further increase animal welfare. In particular we are working on sensing technologies that have no or minimal impact on small animals like piglets and calves.

STEADFAST – Swarm Technology Enabling Advanced Drone-Facilitated Active Support Tactics for Military and First Responder Operations

Situational awareness (SA) is essential for disaster response and military operations, where quick and informed decisions are critical. Achieving effective SA in complex environments involves using intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, along with the collective capabilities of human-swarm teaming (HST). However, deploying HST successfully faces both scientific and societal hurdles. This project aims to enhance response times, improve decision-making, and ensure more efficient use of military and first responder resources, ultimately reducing collateral damage and casualties.
