Presentation, lunch and discussion
On Monday 17 April, the climate crisis coalition – Scientist Rebellion, University Rebellion, Students for Future, the Vegan Study Association and SUSTAIN – is organising a public lecture on the consequences of the ties between the fossil fuel industries and universities.
This lecture will be given by Guus Dix, Assistant Professor 'Digitalisation of Higher Education' at the Center for Higher Education Policy Studies (CHEPS, BMS) & member of the Climate Crisis Coalition.
Why this lecture?
Exxonmobil, Shell and BP are among the largest producers of carbon emissions and are collectively planning to invest around $40 billion per year up to 2029 in new oil and gas fields. The International Energy Agency stated that there is no scenario compatible with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C including the development of new oil and gas fields. Thus, these fossil companies have placed themselves outside of the scope of what is scientifically acceptable and knowingly endanger a sustainable and livable future for all.
Universities, which are the place where knowledge is transmitted and created, can give a clear and unequivocal signal to the student population, academia – and the world at large – that these industries are not reliable partners to lead the energy transition that will prevent the consequences of the climate crisis.
