Master Graduation / Internship Development Project: Smart Home Energy Balance System
Contact Person from the Energy Group: Gerwin Hoogsteen
Location: Enschede, The Netherlands (Hybrid possible) Company: Athom B.V. – creators of Homey
About Us
At Athom, we build Homey, the leading smart home platform that connects thousands of devices and services into one intuitive system. With Homey, people all over the world automate their homes for comfort, security, and energy efficiency. Our mission is to make technology work together, seamlessly – and we’re looking for bright minds to help shape the future of energy in the smart home.
The Topic
With the global transition towards sustainable energy, smart homes will play a crucial role in balancing energy production, storage, and consumption – especially with compensation for residential PV generation dropping and the rise of dynamic energy prices.
We see Homey as a combination of a Smart Home system as well as a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) that empowers households to optimize energy use and integrate renewables across a wide variety of brands, and thus contribute to grid stability. The building blocks are already here. What we need now is a Balancing System and Algorithm to make sure the available (electric) energy in a home is used in the best and most cost-efficient way possible between all the (large) consumers – planned based on forecasts, limitations and needs, and adjusted in real-time based on actuals.
As part of your (master) graduation project or internship, you will work on:
● Designing and developing an Energy Balance system & algorithm for use within Homey’s growing Energy solutions.
● Investigating how to optimally forecast, manage and control household energy flows, including renewable generation (solar), storage (batteries, EVs), pricing inputs and consumption (appliances, Heat Pumps, heating/cooling).
● Translating academic models into a practical, scalable solution for Homey.
● Exploring the interaction between user comfort, cost savings, and grid support.
● Validating your algorithm with real-world Homey data and environments.
What We Offer
● A unique opportunity to contribute to a real-world product used by hundreds of thousands of households worldwide, and make a real impact in the (residential) energy transition.
● Guidance from experienced engineers and product experts.
● Work with the best and most motivated people that all rally behind a single product and OS.
● Access to Homey + partner devices, test setups, and APIs to bring your ideas to life.
● A creative, international, and flexible work environment in our Enschede HQ right at the Oude Markt.
● A graduation allowance and a Homey Pro for your own home.
Who You Are
● A (Master) student in Energy Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Sustainable Energy Technology, or related field.
● Strong analytical skills with knowledge of energy systems.
● Experience with data analysis, simulation tools, or programming (Python/Matlab/JavaScript).
● Enthusiastic about smart homes, renewable energy, and practical innovation.
● Independent, curious, and eager to make an impact.
