Title: "Parallel server systems and optimal control"

Abstract:
From data center to operations research, there are many situations where different types of requests compete for the attention of multiple servers. The questions dispatching incoming jobs to each server is crucial for a good functioning of the system. Optimal control of those system can sometimes be counterintuitive and often intractable. In the context of queueing system, it is often useful to consider a regime speed at which work comes into the system approaches the total service speed. Indeed, for parallel server systems there is a way to transfer insights from the limit to design a good algorithm for the original system. In this colloquium, we will discuss a basic example to illustrate the issues relating to optimal control of parallel server systems and  what an asymptotically optimal dispatching algorithm looks like.
