Title: “Towards super glue and rubber bands in finite element methods, or, on structure preserving methods for computational fluid dynamics"

Abstract:
In this colloquium, we will talk about expectations vs. reality in computational fluid dynamics. We focus on structure preserving properties and how to construct suitable finite element methods for incompressible and compressible flows. To this end, we will examine the question of continuity requirements that arise in the approximation of physical quantities such as pressure and velocity, and how to realize them accordingly. The talk is accompanied with some computations to motivate our findings.
