Douwe de Bruijn was awarded the discovery poster prize at the NanoBioTech-Montreux conference. His efforts in exploring the carbon based ecosystem of calcifying microalgae (coccolithophore) using microfluidics was praised. The work focusses mainly on determining the size of the inorganic exoskeleton with respect to the size of the organic cell via electrical impedance. The relative fixation of inorganic and organic carbon by algae is an important parameter for the ocean carbon cycle.
Title of the work: “Influence of acid treatment on the calcite exoskeleton of algae via impedance flow cytometry”.
