    Welcome

We have entered an era in which Artficial Intelligence is heavily influencing our daily lives. Robots can be viewed as the concrete and tangible embodiment of AI. At the University of Twente we conduct research on the development of human-centered robotics: robots that operate in an environment dominated and controlled by people. This environment dictates our technological research on robots, but also shapes our research concerning the societal and organisational embedding of robots.

This event will highlight what we do at the UT in the field robotics and its relationship to AI and other fields. An important aspect is that we cannot just conduct our research and education in splendid isolation. It is extremely important that we operate in an ecosystem of knowledge institutes, companies and other organisations who collaborate. We invite you to join us and be part of that ecosystem.

    WEARABLE ROBOTICS LAB

Wearable robots can be used to either augment, train, or supplement human motor function. Examples of such robots are exo-skeletons, bionic prostheses, exo-suits, and body worn collaborative robots. The Wearable Robotics Lab (WRL) is used for development, testing and evaluation of these wearable robots in a safe and real-life environment.

    PRECISION ENGINEERING LAB

Precision Engineering considers the development of model-based methods for the design and control of high-precision systems. The main research topics are efficient flexible multibody modelling, design principles for accurate positioning, high-stroke flexure joints, and adaptive model-based control. Precision manipulators for various societal and industrial challenges are designed and controlled.

    ROBOTICS AND MECHATRONICS LAB

Robotics and Mechatronics (RaM) deals with application of modern systems and control methods to practical situations. Focus is on robotics as a specific class of mechatronic systems. The research of the group is application oriented. The main goal is to investigate the applicability of modern systems, imaging and control methods to practical situations in robotics.

    SURGICAL ROBOTICS LAB

The Surgical Robotics Lab (SRL) has a dynamic research agenda, and we consist of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, clinicians, and industrial collaborators. We focus on developing innovative solutions for a broad range of clinically-relevant challenges, including magnetic actuation systems, endovascular instruments, and collaborative robotics for surgical applications.

Title: Engineering 24/7 Humanoids with Motion Intelligence

    Tamim Asfour, Prof. Dr.-Ing.

Regardless of the application area, research on humanoid robotics aims at understanding human performance and intelligence to build versatile systems to assist and empower humans.

    Tamim Asfour, Prof. Dr.-Ing.

    Abstract:

Ambitious goals have been set for humanoid robots. They are expected to be companions and personal assistants for people in different ages and environments, helpers in man-made and natural disasters, and winners against the world soccer champion in 2050.  Regardless of the application area, research on humanoid robotics aims at understanding human performance and intelligence to build versatile systems to assist and empower humans. Currently, we are experiencing AI systems with superhuman performance in games, image and speech processing. However, the generation of robot behaviors with human-like motion intelligence and performance has yet to be achieved. The talk will discuss progress towards 24/7 humanoid robots – as systems that make AI tangible – that learn from humans and own experience, predict the consequences of actions while performing complex manipulation tasks in different environments. The talk will conclude with a discussion of the transformative impact of humanoid robotic as well as the challenges and open problems in Robotics AI.
