THE symposium

We are living in an era of digitalization with big data influencing and shaping our daily work and life at many places and nearly at every time. Currently we can observe an impactful Rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) including machine learning and recent advances in deep learning technology. AI technology has disrupted and started to transform many sectors in industry and research including healthcare, finance, transport, marketing or security.

This symposium focuses on AI in Health. Nowadays there is plenty of healthcare data available in hospitals ranging from medical image analysis (radiology, radiomics), over data mining (EPGs) to data analysis in healthcare logistics. An informative representation and effective combination of such data via data-driven AI technology is the key challenge for the successful healthcare information systems of the future.

The aim of this event is to bring together clinicians, clinical stakeholders (physicians, researchers, data scientists, data engineers) and companies active in Artificial Intelligence to tackle this challenge as a team.

Rajiv Gupta
Mass General / Harvard, Boston USA

Raj Gupta is an Associate Radiologist in the Neuro and Emergency Radiology Divisions at the Massachusetts General Hospital, an Associate Professor of Radiology at the Harvard Medical School, and a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at MIT. Dr. Gupta earned his MD at Cornell University, his PhD in Computer Science at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, MSc (Physics) and BE (Electrical Engineering) from BITS, Pilani. In addition to serving as the CIMIT Site Miner for MGH, he also directs the Advanced X-ray Imaging Sciences (AXIS) Center at MGH. Prior to joining MGH, Dr. Gupta was a Computer Scientist at GE Global Research Center in Niskayuna, NY, conducting research in medical imaging, non-destructive evaluation of aircraft engine parts, and computer vision. Dr. Gupta’s research interests include: (1) Development and clinical applications of novel X-ray imaging modalities; (2) Development and application of computer vision techniques to image analysis; and (3) Study of traumatic brain injury using advanced MRI techniques.

I have a professional working experience of 22 years in consultancy and executing change programs. I have worked for Andersen Consulting and later Accenture at our clients to build their strategic agenda’s,  to lead change programs and to execute on organisational and leadership development programs. Most recent years I have worked with clients to become data driven organisations.   I’m currently focusing on developing our health consulting services with a predominant focus on digital healthcare and analytics in relation to the needed personalisation of healthcare. My strength finder report (according to Gallup research institute) depicts my 5 core strengths in: individualism (focus on unique talents of people), maximiser, activator, harmony, futuristic.

Bram van Ginneken
Co-founder - Thirona & Professor of Medical Image Analysis - Radboud University Medical Center

Bram van Ginneken is Professor of Medical Image Analysis at Radboud University Medical Center and chairs the Diagnostic Image Analysis Group. He also works for Fraunhofer MEVIS in Bremen, Germany, and is a founder of Thirona, a company that develops software and provides services for medical image analysis. He studied Physics at Eindhoven University of Technology and Utrecht University. In 2001, he obtained his Ph.D. at the Image Sciences Institute on Computer-Aided Diagnosis in Chest Radiography. He has (co-)authored over 200 publications in international journals. He is Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging and member of the Editorial Board of Medical Image Analysis. He pioneered the concept of challenges in medical image analysis.

Onno Vijlbrief Radiologist - ZiekenhuisGroep Twente

Onno Vijlbrief received his Medical Degree from the Leiden University in the Netherlands. After this he finished his radiology residency and fellowship training in neuro- and head and neck radiology at The Hague Medical Centre and the Leiden University Medical Centre. He currently works as a neuro- and head and neck radiologist for MRON and ZGT. Interests are focused on using healthcare informatics to improve hospital processes, clinical decision making, visual interpretation and improving patient outcome. Currently through the use of text and process mining, natural language processing and information extraction from electronic health records and hospital image archives.

Maurice van Keulen
Associate Professor in Data Management Technology - University of Twente

He obtained his MSc (1992) and PhD (1997) in Computer Science from the University of Twente. He is currently affiliated with the Data Science research group. He has a special interest in data quality, data cleansing, data integration, and information extraction from natural language. He develops and applies probabilistic methods to perform data integration, capture data quality as uncertainty in data, and store and query high volumes of uncertain data in probabilistic databases. In addition, he has experience and is interested in multi-disciplinary research.

Lydia Mennes
AI specilist - CTcue

Lydia started her studies in medicine, but soon decided to switch to the field of Artificial Intelligence. Throughout her Bachelor and Master studies 'language' has been a topic of great interest for her. After graduating she found a job where she could combine her passion for language with her earlier interest in medicine. At CTcue, where she's been working since 2015, she extracts information from clinical texts in Electronic Health Records (EHRs) in order to make their content available for analysis. Hospitals use CTcue to identify patients for clinical trials and to collect data for quality monitoring and registries. CTcue is currently used in 24 hospitals in The Netherland and Belgium.

Zuhir Bodalal
MD, PhD Student - Netherlands Cancer Institute

No single field of science contains all the answers. Long gone are the days where one discipline could fully encompass a clinical question – we are living in the age of the multidisciplinary team. Dr. Zuhir Bodalal (Elkarghali) is a clinician-scientist based at the Netherlands Cancer Institute with an absolute passion for immuno-oncology. In addition to his clinical training, Zuhir completed a second masters with a focus on Oncology and Immunology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is currently engaged in a PhD program at the Department of Radiology at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek zieken – NKI. He is currently focused on leveraging artificial intelligence for immunological and genetic profiling of tumours. Oncology, immunology, and AI - it’s time to build bridges, not walls, between the sciences!

Ferdi van der Heijden
Associate professor - University of Twente & Project Leader "Virtual Therapy" - Netherlands Cancer Institute

Dr Ferdinand van der Heijden, (M) Associate Professor, obtained his MSc (1981) and PhD (1992) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Twente. He is currently affiliated with the Robotics and Mechatronics group working on medical applications. He conducts his research work at the MIRA Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine. Since 2014, he has also been associated with the Netherlands Cancer Institute / Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital. His research interests are in the area of image and video analysis. The work involves specific applications in surgical navigation, medical image analysis and modelling. He is the author of two widely-used textbooks, “Image Based Measurement Systems” and “Classification, Parameter Estimation and State Estimation”.

Kicky van Leeuwen
Medical Machine Learning Scientist - Medicx.ai

Kicky is a realistic artificial intelligence enthousiast driven by the purpose of improving healthcare with software driven technology. She co-founded Medicx.ai, an organization that aims to make healthcare better and more efficient through data science and artificial intelligence. Aside of that she is currently graduate researcher of Technical Medicine at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek hospital/Netherlands Cancer Institute.

Frank van den Hoogen
Head of the Departments of Rheumatology - Sint Maartenskliniek & Full professor of Rheumatology - Radboud UMC

His scientific interests are systemic autoimmune diseases and inflammatory myopathies, his managerial interest is to achieve the best quality of care at the lowest costs for patients with rheumatic diseases. Furthermore, he is interested in the patient journey. The department of Rheumatology of the Sint Maartenskliniek is rated among the best regarding its scientific output (currently 18 PhD students), its esteem by the patients and its proven high quality of care, as well as the use of data to improve care. His main achievements regard reducing costs with the same or even better  quality of care,  dose optimization of biologics and transitioning of innovator biologics to biosimilars.

Bas Kamphorst
Healthcare logistics consultant - Rythm

Bas studied Industrial Engineering and Management at the University of Twente, where he obtained his MSc in 2014. During his study he became inspired by applying Operations Research principles in healthcare, and therefore followed the Healthcare Technology and Management specialization. Since 2005 he is working for Rhythm, focusing on making the interesting solutions from research available to healthcare organizations and assisting them in improving their capacity management. Currently, Bas is working together with the Sint Maartenskliniek on a long-term hospital-wide project aimed to optimize capacity management.

Richard Boucherie
Full of Professor Stochastic Operations Research - University of Twente

Richard J. Boucherie is full professor of Stochastic Operations Research in the department of Applied Mathematics of the University of Twente, co-founder and co-chair of the University of Twente Center for Healthcare Operations Improvement and Research (CHOIR) in the area of healthcare logistics, and co-founder of the spin-off company Rhythm, that carries out actual implementations of healthcare logistics solutions in healthcare organisations. Richard received M.Sc. degrees in Mathematics (Stochastic Operations Research) and Theoretical Physics (Statistical Physics) from the Universiteit Leiden, and received the Ph.D. degree in Econometrics from the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam. His research interests are in queueing theory, Petri nets and random walks with application areas including wireless and sensor networks, road traffic, network intrusion detection and prevention, and healthcare operations research.
