Mindbugs & Diversity proof selection

‘Talent to the top’ offers practice-oriented and tested trainings to optimally support the University of Twente in achieving the goal of employing at least 20% female full professors by the end of 2020.

With this goal, the UT organized 4 training sessions during the autumn of 2018. These were received very well by the participants, and have led to concrete results. The overarching goal is to increase both diversity and inclusion at the University of Twente.

The aim of the training ‘Mindbugs & Diversity Proof Selection’ is that interactions and decision making at the workplace occur in a neutral and objective manner (gender, question formulations, power relations, examples from practice, soft skills).

The mindbugs section of this training is based on state of the art knowledge about diversity, inclusion, and organisational behaviour.

  • What is diversity and what is inclusion, and how can we influence them? Is D&I about fairness, or is it beneficial to the organization’s ‘business case’ If the answer to the latter is yes: What is the strategic interest of D&I for the University of Twente?
  • What are the different types of biases, and how can we best handle them?

Appraisal and selection play a crucial role in diversity and inclusion, as decisions made in these moments influence career paths and directly impact who is appointed. It is important to be aware of (sub)conscious decision making, and to recognize and acknowledge so called ‘mindbugs’ in yourself and in others. Besides awareness about factors that influence decision making, it is important to be able and comfortably apply the knowledge in practice; both as an individual and as a group.

Which interventions are possible? How do I intervene in a process or a procedure? Which factors do I need to take into account regarding organizational dynamics? What do I dare to do, and what can I do?

How can we prepare as a group to minimize bias? How do we distribute the roles in the group to allow us to work as diversity proof as possible? These, and other questions will be covered in the training.
