This workshop is offered to ITC PhD PhD candidates once a year and aims to enable participants to critically reflect on and improve their research proposals for the GeoEC ethics review and to engage with MSc students and researchers in critical discussion and reflection on ethical concerns in geosciences.
The workshop builds upon the TGS Introductory Program, which includes Academic Integrity training. Completion of this introductory program is required to participate in the Geo Ethics workshop.
After completing the workshop, you will be able to:
Evaluate and reflect on ethical concerns in your research (proposal) and develop mitigation strategies by:
- Applying insights from the TGS Ethics training
- Applying additional Geo-specific resources (e.g., regarding geo privacy)
- Navigate the GeoEC ethics review procedure
You will receive 0.5EC for completing the following:
- Preparation (8 hours):
- Prepare a 5-minute presentation of your research explaining key objectives of the research, research approach and research data.. Write a brief description based on an abridged ethics questionnaire for collective ethics analysis.
- Workshop participation (4 hours):
- Engage in discussions and exercises during the workshop and discuss your research with a group of MSc students
- Post-workshop reflection (2 hours):
- Write a 300-word reflection on ethical considerations in your research. Include one sentence indicating how you will engage in the GeoEC ethics review. Reflections will be shared with the Geo Ethics Committee for feedback . Alternatively, complete and submit an ethics review application through the GeoEC Ethics Review Tool.
