After completing this course you are able:
- describe the complete graduation process and accompanying (different) roles/styles of the supervisor;
- explain the importance of expressing expectations, planning and structured meetings in a graduation process, including the content of the planning and meetings;
- articulate your vision on supervising and can translate it into concrete activities as coach;
- apply different styles and techniques in supervising graduate students and groups of students;be a ‘lazy supervisor’, meaning let the students do the work they can do themselves.
CONTENT
During the course we will pay attention to the following topics: planning of a graduation project, supervising groups, first meeting with the student(s), role and style of supervisor, expectations of supervisor and student, active listening, giving feedback, assessment and motivation.
Of course we also pay attention to your specific questions.
ORGANISATION
Preparation: exercises and assignments, reading course material
In course: assignments (both individual and group), discussions and role play
ADMISSION CRITERIA
The University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) is a compulsory teaching qualification for lecturers, assistant, associate and full professors. PhD students cannot enrol directly on a UTQ course. PhD students will only be accepted for the UTQ in exceptional cases where the PhD student already has considerable teaching experience. FURTHER INFORMATION
In order to be eligible for the UTQ Part Certificate a prerequisite is that you supervise(d) at least 4 (groups of) students. Furthermore you need to participate in all of the sessions hand in the assignments which will be assessed.
