Role of learner in CBL

Mixed learner teams are the core of Challenge-Based Learning.

Students are learners, as they don't follow the traditional student-teacher role. Whenever possible learner teams are made up of students from various backgrounds, levels and study programs. They work together with researchers, entrepreneurs and external organizations to find solutions to current challenges.

Learner teams can be formed in different ways:
• teams are predetermined based on project needs and individual competencies
• teams are organized based on students’ preferences
• teams are self-organized

Whichever path is taken at the beginning, it is absolutely crucial to allow students to take ownership of the challenge – and take over responsibility for team composition, too.
