Nowadays as researchers we are increasingly expected to communicate our science to a wider audience, to engage in dialogue with citizens and other actors, or pitch our research for funding to a non-specialist audience. Science communication is an integral part of our responsibility to society. As with any skill, practice makes perfect—and progress is faster when we share our experiences. This is what we do at the Science Communication Club!
The next Science Communication Club will take place on Thursday 2 October during lunch time.
Steena Stephen, who is currently pursuing a PhD with the ITC faculty at the UT, will talk about the extension programmes conducted by students from the University of Agricultural Sciences in Bengaluru in India to connect and engage farmers with the scientific breakthroughs in agriculture. She will talk about her experiences in the village of Karnataka regarding the dissemination of the latest technologies and scientific studies that she and the team contributed to. This experience was a part of the curriculum of her under-graduation coursework at the university. It acted as a bridge between the scientific research and the farming community.
Dr. Borjana Bogatinoska, postdoctoral researcher in Water Systems (Civil Engineering & Management) at the ET faculty, will begin by sharing insights from her participatory research, highlighting tools and methods that can be used to engage stakeholders in co-creating nature-based solutions for flood protection. She will then reflect on her journey as a Rising Soil Star, focusing not only on how to deliver a compelling five-minute research pitch, but also on the valuable training she received from an experienced TEDx event coach — including practical tips and tricks for effective science communication.
