GP internship

Conceptualising triggers for aggression: a literature review

Organisation : University of Twente, Department of Psychology, Health and Technology (BMS-PHT) / Transfore

Location: Enschede/Deventer, The Netherlands

Period of internship: November 2026 – January 2027

Description of Assignment

The assignment takes place at the Health, Psychology and Technology group from University of Twente, as well as at the research department from Transfore. Transfore is an organization providing forensic mental healthcare services in the Netherlands. You have the option to work partly at the university and join us once a week at Transfore in Deventer.

The assignment consists of part of a scoping review, where the goal is to find existing research on triggers for reactive aggression to create a first version of a definition and categorisation of triggers. Currently, there does not exist a definition or categorisation for triggers yet, and the creation of this could guide psychoeducation used in therapy and future interventions on triggers for aggression. A trigger is the final event or stimuli just before aggressive behaviour. A trigger could for example be missing the train or having an argument with someone. This categorisation could assist patients in recognising their own triggers and adequately utilising coping strategies to try and prevent aggressive behaviour. The scoping review is part of a PhD project, where the following studies will build upon the information gathered in this review. The results will be used for co-creating psychoeducation for triggers, as well as a blended trigger intervention combining ESM and biofeedback within forensic mental healthcare. In forensic mental healthcare, patients often have to follow therapy as part of their sentence for committing a crime, and they have one or more psychiatric disorders.

This assignment consists of extracting definitions and examples of triggers from articles and structuring them neatly for analysis. Depending on the skills and interests of the student, this can also be expanded to analysis/writing of the review or assisting with other running projects of the team.

While the assignment is not specific for aggression within forensic mental healthcare, you can get to know more about this field from the other researchers and their projects as you become fully part of our team. Additionally, you can learn more about a PhD and the activities that come with it. If you want, you can also join in on other research activities of the team to learn more about different data collection methods. Finally, there is an internship fee in line with the Dutch mental healthcare collective labour agreement (CAO GGZ).
