GP internship

Mapping existential issues after stroke: exploring and testing assessment instruments

Organisation: Lectoraat Neurorevalidatie, Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen (HAN), in collaboration with the department of Rehabilitation, Radboudumc, and the department of Psychology, Health & Technology, University of Twente

Location: Mainly HAN (lectoraat Neurorevalidatie) and Radboudumc (department of Rehabilitation)

Period: To be agreed

Brief description of the assignment

People who have had a stroke often face existential questions - about meaning, identity, loss, and their changed future - alongside the physical and cognitive consequences of their condition. Rehabilitation teams increasingly recognize the value of addressing these existential concerns, but there is currently no established, tested way of systematically mapping them in this patient group.

An initial orientation by the research team identified several existing instruments that could potentially be used to map existential issues. However, none of these instruments have so far been tried out with people after stroke.

In this internship you will build on this initial orientation with a further exploration of the literature on instruments for mapping existential issues in people with acquired brain injury/stroke. Based on this exploration, you will select two promising instruments and try these out in practice with stroke patients, mapping the usability of both instruments (e.g. feasibility, comprehensibility, burden for patients, and clinical relevance). Based on your findings, you will formulate a advice to the research team on which instrument(s) are most suitable for use in stroke rehabilitation, and under which conditions.

The internship is carried out at the Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen (HAN), lectoraat Neurorevalidatie, in collaboration with the department of Rehabilitation of Radboudumc. You will be supervised by, among others, the University of Twente.

Since you will interview patients after stroke as part of trying out the instruments, good spoken and written Dutch language proficiency is required.
