Surveillance Camera Design
by Gus Degiorgis as part of his Industrial Design Engeneering thesis project
Ideally we shouldn't need camera surveillanec in parks, but while we still do, it could look something like this.
This new kind of design aims to blend into the park and stick out less, making for a more pleasant eperience, while being recognizable enough as a camera to introduce feelings of safety.
Initial user testing indicates that park visitors are very much in favour of technology such as surveillance cameras being blended into the park surroundings, and that use of rganic material and natural shapes are effective ways if doing this. This new design also signals to the visitor that the park is being cared for. The camera still feels obvious to the visitor and not deceptive; people were confident that the new design can deter crime to a similar level as traditional camera designs (especially in combination with signs).
Nonetheless this camera is not a one-size-fits-all solution or a miracle that solves park safety. We recommend actual adaption of this on a case-by-case basis in combiantion with a community-driven approach. The reasons for surveillance and the locations of the camera need to be discussed with the users or prospective users of the park.
