When or why does the public value restorative justice as a response to crime?

description

Different responses to crime exist. Many people are familiar with the criminal justice system in which an offender is brought to trial and punished for the wrongdoing. The crime is solved between the offender and the state. Meaning that there is little to no room for the victim or the community in the process. In restorative justice these parties do play a role. In restorative justice the victim, the offender and the community together resolve the harm that has been done.

Research question

Research has been done into the public’s view towards punishment. However, little is known about the public’s view towards restorative justice and what explains possible restorative justice goals of people. Different research questions are possible for this project.

Research method

An online experiment seems to be the most obvious way to answer the research question.

Data-analysis

The data of this study will be analysed by quantitative data analysis programmes such as SPSS or R. If you collect qualitative data, Atlas.ti will be used to analyse the data.
