FABIAN GRIMM, MSC

Global Safety Coordinator at All4Labels

I graduated from the University of Twente with a Master’s degree in Psychology for Conflict, Risk and Safety (PCRS) in 2020.

Why Psychology of Conflict, Risk and Safety?

After my B.Sc. in Intercultural Business Psychology from the Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences, I was working as a Learning & Development Business Analyst for an international management consultancy that specialized in leadership development and health and safety management. In my role I had the pleasure to work with customers and leadership teams in workshops and training programmes which I designed.

To make these activities even more professional and effective in the future, I decided to do a master’s degree in Psychology of Conflict, Risk and Safety (PCRS) at the University of Twente. I was particularly interested in the courses "Group Dynamics and Interventions" and "Learning and Instruction" to understand how groups, especially leaders, function, interact and learn. The content of the courses enabled me to design and plan trainings and workshops in a more purposeful and goal-oriented way, and moreover, prepared me even better for the implementation. The international mix of students and the fact that it was an English Master program was a big reason for me to decide for the PCRS programme.

Thesis on Psychological Safety

I was able to complete my master's thesis at Jumbo Maritime, global logistics and off-shore installation company, with great support from Dr. Peter de Vries and Dr. Steven Watson. I found the announcement on the "New Master Thesis Assignments" page and applied directly to Jumbo Maritime. The topic of my Master Thesis was "Antecedents of Psychological Safety in the Maritime Industry - Investigating the influence of antecedents on the psychological safety of on- and offshore employees of a maritime shipping and installation company." It was an exciting project in which I was able to learn a lot about the topics of psychological safety, authentic leadership, and group cohesion, which constantly accompany me in my current role.

Lecturer “Business Psychology” and „Ethical and Ecological Aspects of Management“

Thanks to the good reputation of the University of Twente and the Psychology Master Program, I was able to start giving lectures in the subjects "Business Psychology" and "Ethical and Ecological Aspects of Management" at the iba Bochum in Germany during my thesis. I benefited particularly from the competencies we built in the "Group Dynamics and Interventions" and "Learning and Instruction" courses during my PCRS studies.

Trainee Health & Safety at Ferrero

After I graduated from PCRS, I started a trainee program in Ferrero's Health & Safety Team at the production site in Stadtallendorf. My tasks included the following: supporting the safety specialists for two plants and the supply chain organization and the planning and execution of Health & Safety walk-throughs and COVID-19 audits. Furthermore, the creation and maintenance of managed Health & Safety documents on site level, as well as documentation of the corresponding processes were part of my responsibility.

To further specialize in the behavioral aspect of Health & Safety, I did an additional university certificate in behavior based safety systems at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt.

Global Safety Coordinator at All4Labels

After my trainee position in Ferrero, I joined All4Labels as their global Safety Coordinator. I am responsible for supporting the ca. 40 production sites in all parts of the globe in all aspects of Health and Safety. The role is challenging but extremely exciting because the plants need local support, which means that I spend up to 80% of my working time on business trips to our plants in over 10 countries. On site, I support the plants through site inspections, process analyses and (management) training. Furthermore, I am responsible for the development and execution of Behavior Based Safety topics and activities across the group and spend a lot of time creating and conducting trainings and workshops with our colleagues worldwide. Due to the fast growth of All4Labels, I am also responsible for integration processes of acquired companies. The most exciting part of the role is coaching and training our colleagues to always behave safely, protecting themselves and others, and transforming the company's safety culture so that all employees always work safely because they want to, not because it is a rule.

Tips for (future) students

I would always recommend doing as many internships and/or student jobs as possible. You learn important skills and usually get a great insight into the respective companies. But the most important thing is that you can test without risk whether the desired career suits you and is enjoyable. If so, perfect! If not, you still have enough time to re-orient yourself without worrying and in any case you make yourself much more interesting for companies. Besides, internships are great opportunities to get your foot in the door.
