IEM programme receives reaccreditation based on development-oriented approach

The Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) recently proudly received positive reaccreditation. This recognition highlights the excellence of the programmes and the University of Twente's commitment to high-quality education. What makes this accreditation so special is its development-oriented approach. IEM is the first programme among Dutch universities to use this approach.

The development-oriented approach is an accreditation approach that focuses not only on the described quality but also on the development and improvement of a programme. IEM invited the external expert panel to actively think with them about the challenges ahead. Together, they contemplated the future development of the programme to work towards enhancing it.

One-pagers as basis for dialogue

The development-oriented approach is unique among universities. Instead of an extensive report, this approach employs concise "one-pagers." These one-pagers provide focus and reflection on the existing quality and challenges. Furthermore, they serve as the starting point for the dialogue with the expert panel. Because the one-pagers are created collaboratively, it is an approach that promotes teamwork. The panel members appreciated the openness of the programme and valued being specifically called upon for their expertise.

Marco Schutten (Dr. ir.), Programme Director IEM

The development-oriented approach has relieved the stress of writing the self-reflection report and has saved time. It's great that the focus is on future improvements. Four SWOT analyses form the basis, with input from students, teachers, and the examination board. This has led to broad engagement and recognition.

Conclusion of IEM reaccreditation

IEM receives reaccreditation for its strong academic foundation, practical relevance, and dedication to student success. The panel's recommendations will be taken into account to further improve the programmes and better prepare students for future challenges in both the academic and professional worlds.
