Investigation of Affordance-Based Factors for Innovation in Organizations through Enterprise Social Media: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

:

This study focuses on the investigation of factors that enhance innovation in organizations utilizing Enterprise Social Media (ESM). While ESM has been recognized for its role in enhancing collaboration, knowledge sharing, and transparency; the mechanisms through which it drives employee-driven innovation remain underexplored. To address this gap, a systematic literature review was conducted to identify the key factors that facilitate employee-driven innovation in organizations using ESM.

Guided by the Digital Affordance Theory and Employee-Driven Innovation (EDI) framework, the research questions addressed is: What factors drive successful innovation in organizations using digital platforms? To ensure a comprehensive analysis, thematic coding was conducted using ATLAS.ti, synthesizing findings from 16 quantitative studies on ESM and innovation.

The research provides valuable insights for both academia and practitioners on the design, adoption, and management of ESM to maximize its innovation potential. The results contribute to the understanding of how digital platforms impact employee-driven innovation by uncovering patterns and trends in existing literature. On the other hand, the findings are expected to support organizations in leveraging ESM for digital transformation and fostering an innovation-driven work environment.
