The Differences in Differentiated Instruction for Students with an Auditory and/or Communicative Impairment in Special and Regular Education: a Systematic Review and Expert Appraisal

Abstract

:

The implementation of differentiated instruction (DI) is a crucial aspect of effective education, as it involves the utilisation of diverse teaching methodologies that are specifically tailored to the distinctive learning requirements of students. Despite extensive research on DI in regular education, its application in special education, particularly for students with auditory and/or communicative impairments and language-speech development disorders, remains under-researched. This study examines the extent to which DI principles derived from primary education research are applied in both theory and practice within primary education for students with these impairments. A qualitative research design, including a systematic review and expert appraisal, was employed in order to ascertain the varying degrees of DI principle implementation and impact across special and regular primary education settings. While DI strategies are recognised for addressing diverse learning needs, special education faces distinct challenges. Emphasis on cognitive differentiation and robust interprofessional collaboration among teachers, speech therapists, teaching assistants, and support staff is critical for developing effective instructional strategies. The study highlights the disparity between theoretical literature and practical application, underscoring the need for cohesive teamwork and unified goals to enhance educational outcomes. Future research should address literature gaps and evaluate collaborative training initiatives to better support students with auditory and communicative impairments.
