Futures consciousness is the capacity to anticipate a complex and unpredictable future and to adjust present choices and actions to bring about an ideal future. This capacity contributes to personal well-being and agency and also inspires greater engagement in pro-environmental and civic behavior. Further research is needed to understand how people develop futures consciousness and how we can design educational programs that support this development (Ahvenharju et. al, 2021).

Existing education programs aimed at future awareness have mostly focused on developing students societal perspectives, such as their views on sustainability and social justice. However, various studies among students show a discrepancy between their visions of society and the larger world’s future versus their personal futures (Gidley, Bateman, and Smith, 2004; Angheloiu, Sheldrick and Tennant, 2020).

In this thesis, you will contribute to the development of the Dutch Futures Consciousness Scale developed by Ahvenharju et al., 2021. There is opportunity to mold and build the research question further based on your personal or academic interests (e.g., focusing on specific outcomes, etc).

What do we offer?

In my capacity as a lecturer and researcher at Avans University of Applied Sciences, I can facilitate in sending out invitations to our students to participate in testing the Futures Consciousness questionnaire.
