We work with faculty management to incentivise educational research and provide a dedicated funding overview section on the STER website. We established a supportive infrastructure, offering guidance and resources, and streamlined the application process for efficiency.

  • UT

    BIG (Brinksma Innovation Grant)

    The BIG is an annual grant to an individual (academic) staff member, enabling them to develop and/or test an innovative didactic concept.

    One winner per year: compensation of 0.2 FTE of the winner's appointment for one calendar year, plus € 2,500 funding.

    Teaching & Learning Fellows

    The goal of the Teaching & Learning Fellows programme is to ascertain that staff are stimulated to pioneer educational R&D activities that can advance their professional development and help improve education regarding aspects that are on the educational agenda of the UT.  (More information on the application process will be added following discussions with CEE regarding the call dates).

    Comenius programme

    The Comenius Innovation Programme for Higher Education provides teachers with the resources needed to implement their innovative ideas for education:

    Teaching Fellows  € 50,000 
    Senior Fellows  € 100,000
    Leadership Fellows  €500,000

    When to apply: The grants are open yearly. Typically, around September, you need to submit a letter of intent. 

    Nederlandse Onderwijspremie                                                                                           

    The Nederlandse Onderwijspremie aims to recognise and encourage educational teams for their efforts in educational innovation and improvement.

    First prize €1,200,000
    Second prize €800,000
    Third prize €500,000

    When to apply: Next round: June 2024 

    NRO Grants Available Throughout the Year

    NRO grants support teachers and education teams in higher education to develop initiatives for improving education.

    When to apply: Throughout the year, various grants are available. Subscribe to the NRO or STER website to stay informed:

    VIS: Virtual International Collaboration in Higher Education

    VIS is intended for teachers and education teams in higher education. The objective is to promote students' international experiences through virtual online learning.

    Each application can receive €15,000.

    When to apply: The call typically opens twice a year, around February and August. The application process for the subsidy is relatively straightforward.

    Kennis voor onderwijs van de toekomst 2024

    The NRO has announced the "Kennis voor onderwijs van de toekomst” call for research proposals. Applicants must be university staff or researchers, but the research topic cannot be about university students. Instead, proposals should focus on the eligible sectors: vve, po, sbo, v(s)o, and mbo.

    The calls are categorised as follows:

    • Groot: Funding between €600,000 and €900,000 per application
    • Submission of the letter of intent: September 5, 2024 Submission of the preliminary application: October 10, 2024 Submission of the application: March 18, 2025
    • Middel: Funding between €300,000 and €600,000 per application
    • Submission of the letter of intent: September 12, 2024 Submission of the preliminary application: October 17, 2024 Application: April 1, 2025
    • Klein: Funding between €50,000 and €315,000 per application
    • Submission of the letter of intent: October 15, 2024 Submission of the preliminary application: November 12, 2024 Submission of the application: April 5, 2025

    LLO-Katalysator Subside

    The LLO-Katalysator supports vocational schools, universities, societal organisations, and businesses in driving lifelong learning (LLO) initiatives:

    • Small projects: €50,000 to €125,000
    • Large projects: €125,000 to €2 million

    Funding schemes:

    • LLO Solutions for Energy and Resource Transition (LLO-oplossingen energie- en grondstoffentransitie)
    • LLO Professionalization of Educators (LLO-professionalisering opleiders)

    When to apply: 

    • Application period for round 3: November 18 - December 2, 2024
  • International Funding Possibilities

    Erasmus+

    Erasmus+ is the European Union’s programme and offers exchange and funding opportunities to students and staff in higher education.

    Learning Mobility of Individuals: Erasmus+ Key Action 1 (KA1): Supports physical and blended mobility of students and staff members.

    Cooperation Among Organisations and Institutions: Erasmus+ Key Action 2 (KA2): Supports partnerships between organisations and institutions for cooperation, excellence, innovation and/or capacity-building projects.

    Support to Policy Development and Cooperation: Erasmus+ Key Action 3 (KA3): Supports policy cooperation at the European Union level.
