Paul Kelly was full professor of "Computational Materials Science" at the University of Twente (the Netherlands) from 1997 till he retired in 2021 having worked at Philips Research Laboratories for twelve years before that. His current research focusses on developing ab-initio methods for studying spin dependent transport in complex materials and on topics relating to two dimensional van der Waals structures. He obtained his B.Sc. degree in physics in 1976 from University College Dublin, did research on the electronic structure of actinide oxides at the (Kern)forschungszentrum Karlsruhe leading to a PhD degree in 1980 and then worked on a variety of density-functional-theory related topics at the Max-Planck-Institut für Festkörperforschung in Stuttgart and at IBM Yorktown Heights before joining Philips Research in 1985.
