The value of computer models in the treatment of orthopaedic patients
Joint replacement surgery - such as for the hip and knee - is considered a successful orthopaedic intervention to restore the functionality of a severely diseased articulation due to osteoarthritis. A large proportion of patients is, however, dissatisfied with their joint reconstruction. Navigation and robotics have been used in joint replacement in an attempt to reduce outliers and improve the precision of implantation. What is yet unclear is the target of these versatile instruments that will lead to clinical improvement. Computer models could assist surgeons in comprehensively understanding the patient’s musculoskeletal pathophysiology and subsequently in formulating a personalized treatment plan towards optimizing the clinical outcomes.
