On Oct. 29, the Night of the Night will be organized in the Netherlands to draw attention to light pollution. Therefore, starting at 7:30 p.m., the Campus Carillon Circle will play music appropriate to the theme on the Campus Carillon on the carillon field of the University of Twente. UT turns off the lights around the Carillon, so the concert takes place in the dark. The concert is open for everyone, attending is free of charge and registration is not neccesary.
Night of the Night
Leave the dark dark and discover how beautiful the night is during the Night of the Night, an annual event organized by the Nature and Environment Federations, this year on Oct. 29. During the Night of the Night, activities are organized in the dark throughout the country. Hundreds of companies and municipalities turn off lights of buildings and advertising lights to draw attention to energy conservation and light pollution, including the Enschede Campus Carillon Circle (CBK) in cooperation with the University of Twente.
Campus Carillonneurs
The city carillonneurs of Enschede and Oldenzaal - Esther Schopman and Hylke Banning - teach students, employees and alumni of the University of Twente who want to learn to play the Campus Carillon. This instrument consists of 49 bells hanging in the steel tower designed by Gerrit Rietveld on the carillon field on the UT campus. In addition to all members playing individually on the tower, the CBK also organizes joint concerts every year. For example, there was a Christmas concert in 2020, a St. Nicholas concert in 2021, and this year a concert is planned during the Night of the Night.
The Campus Carillon Circle would like to contribute to the Night of the Night by playing a candlelight program on the Campus Carillon. At 7:30 p.m., from the bell tower, the event will be kicked off with the song Mag het Licht Uit by the Dutch band De Dijk. After that musical call to turn of the lights, each carillon student will play something at his or her own level that can be associated with the theme by music and/or title. The carillon teachers also participate. This is the concert program:

Call to action: turn off the light
It can be seen from space that our country is lit up almost entirely by artificial light. Much of this is unnecessary and therefore light pollution. Some street lighting and the lighting of office buildings is not really necessary. Neither do empty parking lots and garages need to be lit. Monuments and billboards are often unnecessarily lit all night. Banning and Schopman: "Wouldn't it be great if at least one day a year - on the last Saturday in October, but preferably more often, of course - the lights could be turned off wherever possible and we could all spend the evening and night by moonlight, starlight and candlelight?" Good for the environment and cozy too, according to the carillon teachers. Will you join us?
