DEAN Alumni Tour Germany - Berlin

BERLIN, TUESDAY 11 DECEMBER

Prof. Dr. Roel van der Krol, since 2012, Director of the Institute for Solar Fuels at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH, and full professor at the Department of Chemistry, Technische Universität Berlin will discuss different approaches towards a clean energy future. Once a student at Delft University, (graduation in 1995), he got his Ph.D. in 2000. Since then he was engaged as an academic lecturer at the Delft Faculty TNW (Materials and Energy and Conversion storage) till 2012.

From Sunlight to Chemical Fuels: Towards a Clean Energy Future

As outlined in the recently published Special Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the reduction of global CO2 emissions is one of society’s most important and urgent challenges. In all future energy scenarios aimed at reducing CO2 emissions, solar energy plays a major role. However, to cope with the intermittent nature of sunlight, large-scale storage solutions are required. An attractive pathway is to directly convert abundant resources, such as water and CO2, into chemical fuels with sunlight. The advantages and challenges of this approach will be discussed and illustrated with examples of recent scientific breakthroughs in this exciting and growing field.
