Tushar Satav

In this thesis a weakly multivalent system has been developed. The result is a model system with a small multivalency enhancement factor, thus ensuring higher valences of interaction avoiding kinetically trapped state of the complex. ‘This will help to understand the mechanism of multivalent interactions,’ says Tushar Satav. ‘For example the interaction of the influenza virus with a host cell, in a biological context will help to understand the mechanism of multivalent interactions. This might improve next generation of molecular and regenerative medicines to be designed effectively and more predictably. 

The final results of Tushar Satav’s PhD-work took shape after approximately two years, he says. Synthesizing dendrimers on biologically relevant layers, then showed its first results. The affinity of bio-medically relevant polymers, and its programmable properties might be useful in future, for example in heart stents. This was his initial subject of investigation.

During the project Tushar, and his colleagues at the Molecular Nanofabrication Group, collaborated with Professor Damien Thompson from the University of Limerick. ‘His knowledge of molecular dynamics and simulations was of great importance in understanding multivalent interactions,’ Tushar says. ‘Also other collaborations proved fruitful including Biomedical Engineering experts from TU/e in Eindhoven.’

Freedom

During the PhD Tushar experienced complete freedom to design his experiments, and all colleagues willing to contribute to his research ideas. They helped me shift my angle of research,’ he says. ‘Publications in high-impact journals are now underway.’

After the PhD-defence Tushar will be working as a post-doc in the Mesa+ Biomaterials Science and Technology Group. Synthesizing peptides and characterizing its biological activity will be central in this.

Align thinking

Tushar: ‘Chemistry, biology and physics have become familiar in my research activities, which I extremely like. The quantitative aspects, working towards predictable process designs, do appeal to me a lot. Seeking collaborations across disciplinary borders is challenging, and help me align my own thinking and performing ways of research. The Mesa+ Groups are highly open, always wanting to discuss results and think along with me, finding new lines of research.’

In the more far away future Tushar aims at learning different facets business, R&D, preferably by joining a start-up company. ‘In this way I will be able to complete my skills even further and also to get in touch with different departments. After discovering my interests and skills further, I would like to apply for a R&D or managing position within a multinational company.’
