Impact Domains

Climate change, the reduction of CO2 emissions, more efficient energy storage and fewer or ideally no animals needed for testing medication: just a few examples of societal challenges.

At MESA+, we address these challenges and work on innovative and sustainable solutions based on our fascination for nanotechnology. With our research, we contribute to a fair, sustainable and digital society. Our research focuses on societal challenges in four impact domains: Climate, Health, Safety & Security and Chip Technology 


Our Impact Domains
Health
Nanotechnology enables us to screen individuals for diseases such as cancer, using just a minimal amount of body fluids. And thanks to our organ-on-chip research, it is now possible to test medication on a chip. This means that animal testing is no longer needed. Read more about our research in Health.

Climate
Countries across the world have set themselves the goal of combatting climate change. Therefore, a lot of research is being done on energy and sustainability. Scientists at MESA+ are researching these things at the nanoscale in order to answer questions such as ‘How can we ensure a sustainable energy supply in the future?’ and ‘How can we reduce CO2 emissions? Two examples of research that MESA+ is working on are the following.

Nanotechnology also plays an indispensable role in agriculture. Societal challenges such as providing the growing world population with sufficient food and clean drinking water and the transition from animal to vegetable proteins are answered with the help of nanotechnology.

Safety & security
How safe are new technical innovations? How do we protect our data and ensure that we can transfer money safely, without third parties being able to alter the transaction? Scientists of the QUANTUM Centre at MESA+ have found a way to protect data. Read more about our research in Security.
