FAQ prospective students

  • Does Embedded Systems at the UT have specializations?

    No we don’t have pre-defined specializations. This gives you a lot of freedom to shape your own programme within the embedded systems programme requirements. So you can still choose to specialize in a certain area. We also have a programme mentor that is available guide you with what electives to take if you want to go in for example the area of dependable systems or energy efficient systems.

  • How can I prepare for a premaster Embedded Systems?

    We recommend having either a VWO Mathematics B background or some calculus and mathematics already in your programme and brush up on this. Furthermore the programme is English taught so a good command of the English language is also highly recommended.   • Which courses are part of the premaster Embedded Systems

    The courses in the premaster depend on your previous education and the knowledge that was lacking. Though for HBO students the programme usually looks like this https://www.utwente.nl/en/emsys/programme/premaster-emsys/ and consists mainly of mathematical courses together digital logic and computer organization and with either programming if you come from a EE background or basics in electrical engineering if you come from a more CS background.

  • Can I do an internship at a company?

    An internship is an optional part of the programme.  However HBO students have electives instead.

  • Where do your alumni end up? And how easy is it to find a job after finishing the programme?

    Our alumni are in high demand. On average it only takes them a few months to find a suitable job. Our alumni end up at for example NXP, Thales, Demcon, ASML, ARM, Nieuwstroom, TNO, Essent. But also at some smaller companies in the region like Bruco or 3T. And some opt to stay at either our university or another and go into a career in research. Furthermore our university is known for its entrepreneurial character and in line with that some of our alumni also started their own company. An example of a recent startup is for example QBaylogic.

  • Can I do a PhD after my Embedded Systems Master’s at the UT?

    We don’t offer guaranteed PhD positions. However quite a few of our graduates go onto a PhD at one of the research chairs involved in our programme. A PhD position in the Netherlands is generally a paid position. Therefore these are sometimes advertised on our university job page or even before that on the websites of our research chairs.

  • How many students enter the programme each year?

    About 20 to 30 students enter the master programme.  

  • What is the success rate in the premaster?

    The last six academic years (until 2019-2020) is was between 61% and 73%

  • Is there a close collaboration with industry and research during the programme?

    In  a research project often many partners contribute, also from industry. The final project is often part of ongoing research.  

  • Can I take the premaster as part of the University of Applied Sciences (HBO)?
