Radio Systems newsletter - September 2024

This is the seventh edition of our biannual newsletter. The aim is to give an update about recent developments within the Radio Systems group of the University of Twente. We also share here more general information concerning interesting conferences and developments.

The most important development in the last half year is that the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) group, which was formerly part of the Power Electronic group, has now joined the Radio Systems group. The EMC group consists of 3 staff members (Frank Leferink, Niek Moonen and Tom Hartman), 1 scientific researcher (Robert Vogt-Ardatjew), 3 PostDocs (Karol Niwiadomski, Erjon Ballukja and Daria Nemashkalo) and 12 PhD students (we won’t list them all here, you can find their names on our website). Because of this, the Radio Systems group now provides expertise in Antennas and Propagation, Electromagnetic Compatibility, and Signal Processing with applications in health, sustainability and connectivity.

In April, the SMARTTEST project proposal was approved. SMARTTEST is a Marie Curie Doctoral Network project, initiated by Dr. Yang Miao, and the University of Twente will be the coordinator of this project. Besides the Biomedical Signals and Systems group of the University of Twente, other partners within the project include TNO, Ziekenhuisgroep Twente (ZGT), Utrecht University, KU Leuven, University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), Technická univerzita Ostrava (VSB), and Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI). The Radio Systems group will host 2 PhD students working on Joint Communication and Sensing.

Besides the SMARTTEST proposal, also the 6G-BRICKS project ADA-BEAM, initiated by Yang Miao, was approved. This project provides funding for a PostDoc position for 6 months. The main aim of the ADA-BEAM project is to validate Digital beamforming algorithms and/or synchronization algorithms on offline datasets of 5G waveforms and motion capture data collected at KUL.

On July 5th, 6 bachelor students graduated from the Radio Systems group. Hidde Laagland, Shinwoon Kim, Zsombor Szarka, Askar Sadykov, Shaunak Kubal, and Luuk Vink, congratulations with obtaining you bachelor’s degree! We also congratulate Shaunak Kubal on the best scientific work award.

In September, Mensah Obeng Afrane started as a PhD student within the Future Network Services project. He will work on Joint Communication and Sensing. The group is also currently recruiting a PhD student to work on ‘Digitally Enhanced Analog’.

Besides our efforts in research and education, we had our annual summer group outing at ‘Het Rutbeek’ on July 31st with climbing in the climbing forest, archery, and tubing. The day was closed with an nice diner at Asaka.

If you have something to share in the next newsletter, if you want to put a team, a person or a project in the spotlight, or if you have any other suggestions, please let us know.
