Radio Systems newsletter - September 2023

The Radio Systems group of the University of Twente provides expertise in physical layer design of Wireless Communications and Sensing systems. In our research and education, we focus on Radio Propagation and Channel Modelling, Antenna Systems, and Signal Processing with applications in 5G/6G, Radar and Health monitoring. Our aim is to interconnect anything, anywhere, anytime under all conditions and to exploit unobtrusive wireless monitoring for IoT, healthcare, safety and security.

Within the 4TU project “Green Sensors” we welcome Sujith Raman as assistant professor. The Green Sensors project is a collaboration between four technical universities (Technical University Eindhoven, Technical University Delft, Wageningen University of Research and the University of Twente) and is researching biodegradable wireless sensor networks. Within the Radio Systems group, sustainable communication technology is an increasingly important topic and we are confident that Sujith will make a major contribution to it.

Another milestone was the conditional approval of the 6G Future Network Services project by the National Growth Fund. The Radio Systems group is involved in program line 1, Intelligent Components. Topics that will be covered by the Radio Systems group within the project are transmit- and receiver antenna arrays and joint communication and sensing (JCAS).

In the context of JCAS, the NWO OTP project 3D-ComS has started from Sep. 2023. 3D-ComS aims for innovations on shared array aperture, receiver, and radio resource allocation for the integrated functionality of communication and sensing. Furthermore, Yang Miao did a secondment in Japan within the Japanese NICT foreign researcher exchange program 2023. Furthermore, she has been appointed ‘senior member’ of the URSI.

In our efforts to continuously improve our Radio Systems educational program, we have further aligned the contents of our courses. To better reflect what is taught, we decided to change the names of two master courses. Wireless Propagation Channels has been renamed to “5G/6G Communication and Sensing Channels (5G/6G ComSens)” and Advanced Multiple Antenna Systems to “Advanced Communication and Radar Systems (ACARS)”. The changes are effective from the academic year 2023/2024.

 Aakash Arora short bio – I am an assistant professor in the Radio Systems group at EEMCS. I received my M.S. (Research) degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, New Delhi, India, in 2017, and my Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg in May 2021. My doctoral thesis received the Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) / Fonds National de la Recherche at the FNR Awards 2022 ceremony in Luxembourg in October 2022. From July 2021 to August 2021, I worked as a Research Associate/Postdoctoral Researcher with SnT, the University of Luxembourg. I then worked as a Consultant – 5G Baseband/Physical Layer Algorithm Researcher with Incluso AB (Client: Huawei Technologies Sweden AB), Stockholm, Sweden, from September 2021 to November 2022. My research interests include optimization algorithms, statistical signal processing, wireless communications, and machine learning. I am an IEEE member and a reviewer for peer-reviewed international journals and conferences.
