Doing a Ph.D. at Radio Systems group

We look for motivated and qualified PhD candidates on a regular basis. These are based on fully funded positions within the framework of a research project, often in collaboration with other groups, universities, or the industry.

You can visit the University of Twente vacancies page for information on open positions.

More Information
To make the research results reproducable in our group we have prepared a research data management plan which must be followed by all BSc.\MSc. students and PhD candidates in the RS group.

B.SC./M.SC. THESIS PROJECT OR OTHER ASSIGNMENTS

If you are attending one of the bachelor or master programs at this university, and are interested in doing a thesis project or other assignment in our group, please have a look at the Assignments section. You may find more information about the graduation procedure below.

If you are interested in studying at our university and doing a thesis project in our group, but you have not yet enrolled in one of our education programs, please have a look at the information for prospective students on our faculty website. Please note that there is no need to contact people in our group for discussing your final thesis project before starting the program.

If you are attending a master program at a different university in a different EU country, but you would like to do your thesis project in our group, please read the information about exchange students. Please note that we do not provide funds for supporting such an exchange.

  • Bachelore Graduation procedure

Rules from Education and Examination Regulations, 2020-2021 academic year*.

From the Electrical Engineering programme-specific section:

Article B6 The Bachelor thesis project

    1. When the prior knowledge requirements referred to in Article B4.2 are met, the student may select a research chair at any university as the site where the student will carry out the Bachelor thesis project. In case the assignment is performed outside the department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Twente, the permission of the Programme Director is required prior to starting the thesis project.
    2. In any case one of the research chairs of the department of Electrical Engineering or one of the affiliated and approved chairs at the University of Twente is responsible for the assignment. The following research groups (chairs) take part in the Electrical Engineering programme:
    3. The research chair appoints a supervisory committee consisting of at least three persons. The committee consists of the daily supervisor, an assistant professor or associate professor or full professor of the chosen research chair and a member not being a member of the research chair involved (sometimes called an external member). 3. The supervisory committee shall include at least two examiners. The third member must be an expert in the field, PhD candidate, postdoc, assistant professor, associate professor or full professor.
    4. The Bachelor thesis project has a study load of 15 credits. The project should be finished within the module.
    5. The student’s performance shall be assessed on the closing date, irrespective of the stage his work has reached.
    6. If the grade for the assignment is below a pass grade, the chair may give the student the opportunity to continue working on the assignment so as to meet the requirements for a pass grade. The extra time allowed shall however be limited to a study load equivalent to 3 credits. The grade for the assignment may not exceed a 6 in this case.
    7. The Programme director (PD) decides about additional time in cases that a delay is not caused by the student.
    8. If the student’s performance is still unsatisfactory after extra time has been allowed, the student will have to do a new assignment with another theme and a different supervisory committee or under the authority of a different chair.

    Radio Systems specific rules

    • At the beginning of the BSc project a supervision scheme is agreed upon by the supervisors and the student. It is recommended to have at least a bi-weekly meeting with the daily supervisor
    • Not later than 1 month after graduation, the Research Data and Documentation have to be archived (see the Radio Systems Data Management Plan)

    * The rules, as published on the website of the Electrical Engineering programme are always leading.

  • Master graduation procedure

Rules from Education and Examination Regulations, 2020-2021 academic year*.

    From the faculty section:

    Article A3.7 Master’s final Project

    1. Requirements for starting the final project:
    • Students must have no more than 10 ECs still to complete, other than the final project;
    • As an exception to the rule above, if the programme allows for a combined final project and internship, 10 ECs in unfinished courses other than the internship and final project are allowed.
    1. The student and examiner(s) must agree on the start date and completion date for the Master's final project.
    2. This agreement is to be documented in a plan that takes into account the nominal length of the final project, a reasonable holiday period and any uncompleted study units.
    3. The timetable for completion must be approved by the supervisor and signed by the student.
    4. The Final project is concluded with an oral presentation in public at the University of Twente, unless the project is carried out at another university as part of the exit year of a double degree programme.
    5. Programme-specific regulations regarding the final project are stipulated in Section B.

A3.8 Composition of the assessment committee for the Final Project

    1. The committee contains at least two examiners, at least one of which is senior examiner; it is chaired by a senior examiner
    2. The examiners must belong to (at least) two different research groups
    3. All supervisors of the project are members of the assessment committee. Supervisors who are not examiners serve on the committee in an advisory capacity.
    4. The examiners are collectively responsible for grading the thesis. In case of different opinions among the examiners, the chair of the assessment committee takes the ultimate decision on the grade
    5. In the event that the assessment committee cannot meet the above specifications, a motivated request to the Examination Board may be made by the Programme Board. The approval for the particular assignment remains valid during the academic year in which the request was granted or the duration of the final project in question with the maximum of one year.

From the Electrical Engineering programme-specific section:

    Article B5.4 Master’s final project

See Article A3.7 for regulations regarding the start and the planning procedure of the Master’s final project.

    1. Immediately after the final date of the project as recorded in the study plan, the graduation committee shall issue an opinion on how the project was carried out and determine the final mark.
    2. If this final mark is a fail then the student must carry out a supplement to the project within a period of two months, after which the graduation committee will state its opinion again, which will lead at the most to a 6. In exceptional cases a higher grade is possible.
    3. This new final mark will be regarded as the result of a resit.
    4. If the result of a resit is a fail, then the student shall have to carry out a new Master's final project.
    5. The graduation committee of the Master’s final project must justify its assessment by filling in the assessment form for the Master’s final project, shown in Appendix III.
    6. If any of the rubrics for the assessment, “Scientific Quality”, “Organization, planning, collaboration” or “Communication”, has been assessed as insufficient (less than 5.5), the final grade cannot be higher than 5.

    Radio Systems specific rules

    • At the beginning of the MSc project a date is set for the mid term presentation. This is a presentation for the Radio Systems group. The student contacts the secretary of the Radio Systems group for a date.
    • Not later than 1 month after graduation, the Research Data and Documentation have to be archived (see the Radio Systems Data Management Plan)

*The rules, as published on the website of the Electrical Engineering programme are always leading.

Internships

Unfortunately it is not possible to host internships within our group. However we do have a lot of contacts with other universities and the industry, both in the Netherlands and abroad. If you are attending an education program at this university and you would like to do an external internship related to radio systems, you are very welcome to come by and discuss.
