WATER:
Investigating the failure of PVC pipes
Status: Assigned
Student: Robbin Vording
Problem Statement:
More than one-half of Dutch water mains is PVC pipes, which has lowest failure rate when comparing to other materials. However, during operation, the PVC pipes also has failure due to complex interaction between the pipes and the operating environment. Failure data was recorded in many years by Dutch Water Company and need to be classified and analyzed to get insight of the possibility causes of failure.
Tasks:
Failure data was recorded in categories such as age, year of production, size of pipe, location, etc. The extra data is daily temperature, operating pressure can be get on the water company website. Student will investigate data to find the correlation between these parameters:
- Failure rate vs age, years of production (before 1970, 1970- 1980, 1980-1990, after 1980), size, temperature, operating pressure.
- Failure type vs age, years of production, size, temperature, pressure.
