Research Talk: Aircraft maintenance: stochastic modeling and optimization Mihaela Mitici (Air Transport & Operations, TU Delft)

Abstract

Aircraft maintenance is key to ensure efficient and safe flights. It is thus no surprise that aircraft maintenance is done in a conservative manner, with frequent and potentially redundant checks. With the increasing possibility of monitoring components’ health using sensors, data analytics and stochastic modeling, the aircraft maintenance is changing dramatically: component failure times are predicted and, in turn, a better planning for component checks and replacements is performed.

In this presentation we discuss the process of analyzing components’ health sensor data, to modeling the degradation of  the components using stochastic processes, to optimizing the replacement planning for aircraft components. In particular, challenges and opportunities for each of these three steps will be outlined.
