Dispatch+: Extension to a case study of Amsterdam ArenA

Metropolitan areas with large event facilities such as stadiums are of special interests for Smart Energy System (SES) solutions due to their ample potential for further efficiency improvements and integration of RES. Among them, ArenA has developed several ambitious targets to be the first stadium to be net climate neutral. Electrical energy storage (EES) system combined with local PV production is shown to be a good supplement to realize such stadium as a micro grid. This extensive investment creates a great chance and also challenge for advanced energy management and control systems to secure grid operation and energy supply, while maximizing customer benefits via viable business models. This project aims to develop principal solutions for solving metropolitan energy supply issues based on cutting-edge research results from DISPATCH. This proof-of-concept study focuses on validation of DISPATCH’s advanced scheduling and control mechanisms to tackle specific challenges of Amsterdam ArenA. This project will implement a two-step validation approach. In the first phase, validation under software simulation and laboratory setup will be conducted to prove technology feasibility. The second phase will focus on demonstration activities in the field trial of ArenA. Validation of such innovation solutions in a realistic test environment including highly dynamic participant like ArenA would be valuable for both researchers and involved stakeholders to prototype and adopt faster innovation solutions. Replication of innovation in this large scale test environment is the next crucial step to determine how these solutions can be made suitable for the future energy system.
