Collaborative research on Twente’s future infrastructure

A new project has started within the JIC-DLM collaboration between the University of Twente and TNO. It examines the long-term needs for Twente’s infrastructure and associated workforce capacity in the coming decades. In this way, the research helps regional actors prepare for emerging challenges related to planning, coordination, and labour availability.

A substantial part of Twente’s physical infrastructure is expected to reach the end of its technical lifespan in the coming decades. At the same time, social and environmental developments are placing growing demands on infrastructure systems. Public authorities and network operators carry significant responsibilities in addressing these transitions, often relying on regional contractors. Questions are increasingly being raised about the extent to which current systems and capacity can meet these evolving demands.

Clear overview of upcoming work

To support better planning, the project brings together current plans and forecasts. It includes:

  • A timeline of expected infrastructure works across the Twentse infrastructure owners in the next decades
  • Ongoing developments in labour capacity and broader infrastructure developments

This overview contributes to a clearer picture of what is expected, what may be feasible, and where important choices could arise.

Helping governments plan ahead

The analysis helps to identify where priorities might need to be revisited, where collaboration could be strengthened, and how developments in workforce or technology may shape the delivery of future infrastructure efforts. The goal is to offer an informed basis for further reflection and consideration.

Supporting a strong and resilient region

By bringing together key insights, the project supports the region’s ability to adapt to long-term challenges in infrastructure. It encourages a more comprehensive and better-informed approach to planning and investment, and offers input for building a resilient Twente. In doing so, it highlights knowledge gaps and practical questions that may be relevant across sectors.
