In the rapidly evolving landscape of AI technology, citizens are increasingly concerned about the unequal power dynamics and the sense of losing control over their digital lives. They often feel that AI is an external force acting upon them, leading to mistrust and disempowerment. Addressing this, the central theme of our NWA-ORC Route is: "Empowering Dutch citizens with the knowledge and tools to navigate and shape the AI society."
We embrace this challenge aiming to go beyond a classic citizen-centric initiative. Therefore, our challenge is: What can this project add? We strive for a shared, inspiring and innovative narrative that takes the theme of this NWA-ORC route to a higher level, making the project inspiring, rewarding and enriching in many different ways for all participants, be they academics, professionals or citizens.
Key starting points of our reasoning and potential approach are:
- Commitment to the NWA-ORC Vision: We align with the core principles of the NWA-ORC, placing citizen empowerment at the forefront.
- Problem-Focused: We centre our efforts around the real issues citizens face with AI.
- Learning from Existing Initiatives: We build on the successes and lessons of current citizen-centric AI projects.
- Inter- and Transdisciplinary Collaboration: By synergizing diverse fields and fostering robust communication, we can achieve significant impact.
- Citizen Science: We value the insights and contributions of citizens, ensuring a reciprocal learning experience.
- Inclusive Consortium: Our consortium supports the professional and academic growth of all its members.
- Authentic Engagement: True engagement with citizens, including professionals, is vital to our project's success. Learning is a two-way street between academics, professionals, and citizens.
- Comprehensive Expertise Development: Consortium members will gain both broad and deep expertise throughout the project.
- Welcoming Networks: We aim to create open, supportive networks that champion human-centric AI initiatives.
- Adherence to NWA-ORC Criteria: We commit to meeting all criteria outlined by the NWA-ORC call (Section 4.3).
- Societal innovation
Key steps we are going to take:
- Project Coordination (Work Package 1): Establish a ‘research and learning’ trajectory for all consortium members.
- Form a Learning Community: Foster a collaborative and dynamic learning environment.
- Embrace Inter- and Transdisciplinary Work: Cultivate an open, constructive attitude towards interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Active Project Management: Design and execute project management strategies that actively support these ideals.
