AI-driven forensic investigation system nominated for Computable Awards 2025

The AI-driven forensic investigation system of the UT, Saxion and the Police Academy has been nominated for the Computable Awards 2025. The Computable Awards are 'the leading professional awards of the Dutch IT sector'. Within this (PhD) research, UT researcher Dimitar Rangelov focuses on crime scenes, looking at 3D reconstructions, gas detection and AI-driven scenario analyses.

The AI-driven investigation system allows the investigators to analyze a crime scene faster, more accurately and more safely. The system is portable or can be integrated on a remote-controlled robotic platform. This makes the system widely applicable, even at a crime scene in a dangerous environment.

With the help of artificial intelligence and computer vision, the system can make 3D reconstructions, thus contributing to even greater precision in forensic investigations. At the same time, the system can provide a safer working environment for investigators, who do not have to come into contact with toxic substances, for example, thanks to the remotely controlled technology.

The project is part of a broader collaboration between the University of Twente, Saxion University of Applied Sciences and other partners within CVD Apeldoorn. It lays the foundation for future initiatives between the UT and Saxion in the field of applied AI and robotics for public safety.

Top rating

According to the Computable Awards selection committee, the nomination of the AI-driven forensic investigation system is the result of a careful selection from hundreds of entries, judged by a panel of Computable experts. The nominated system received one of the highest scores in the category 'Educational project'.

The Computable Awards will be presented for the twentieth time in 2025. This anniversary edition, which has the theme 'Rebooting Reality', takes place in a world that is on edge, according to the competition organization. AI, disinformation, climate problems and (cyber) wars are forcing us to choose again: what is real, and what is not? How do we build a digital world that is safer, more human and more conscious?

The winners of the Computable Awards 2025 will be announced per category on 18 November at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht.
