msc internship and graduation with a company
In the master program Mechanical Engineering, students do an internship and graduation assignement. Students can do the internship & graduation assignment in cooperation with a company: a valuable opportunity to experience a particular field in professional practice and to build connections.
In the Mechanical Engineering course at the University of Twente (UT), we support the study and career orientation of students. Learning about and experiencing the practice is an important factor in this. The mandatory phases in the Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering are an important component of this. Students can also do a graduation assignment in collaboration with an external organisation.
As a company or organisation, you can submit assignments for interns and graduating students to our Mechanical Engineering course.
Internship
You can submit an internship assignment to the Mechanical Engineering course. We then bring this to the attention of students so that they can choose an assignment of their interest. The student makes contact with the company. In a mutual introduction, the company and the student explore the mutual connection together. If this is positive, the student will contact the university supervisor for coordination and approval of the assignment.
The starting point for the assignment is that it is substantively relevant to the organization. The student can be involved in formulating the assignment. The assignment must be in the field of (applied) technical sciences and can be (part of) a fundamental research project, product development or a production (re)organisation. The student works on the internship assignment for ten weeks and concludes it with a substantive report and reflection.
You can email an internship assignment to internship-me@utwente.nl. We would like to receive:
- a brief description of the assignment
- a brief description of the company
- the duration and period of the internship
- contact details
Images may be sent separately, but a poster/PDF that has already been made up is also allowed. We prefer an English assignment description because of the international students.
WHY a student within your company?
An intern makes a valuable contribution to your company or organisation.
- Strengthening your team - An intern works on a project that makes sense for the company. The student becomes familiar with mechanical engineering in practice and learns to apply acquired knowledge and skills in a practical situation. This develops new skills within your team.
- Getting to know potential new colleagues - The internship period provides the opportunity to get to know each other extensively. It often happens that students go to work at their former internship company or organisation after graduation.
- New energy and new perspective - Interns can also provide new ideas. You are dealing with young, eager to learn professionals. Partly due to their training, they look at your customers, services and products with a fresh look.
Graduation
Does your company or organisation have a research question? Students can work on this in their graduation assignment. A graduating student works on this as an independent researcher, based on the final objectives of the course and under supervision from the university. Within the company there is cooperation with the company's daily supervisor and colleagues. The student participates as a fully-fledged professional colleague. For the practical research question, the students conduct research for about eight months and write their conclusions in their thesis.
If your company or organisation has a proposal for an assignment, please contact us.
