Possible Worlds Dirk Comello & Wim Kamphuis

The two artists of this exhibition, Dirk Comello and Wim Kamphuis, are of different generations, but both have a common interest / source of inspiration: ethnography. In this exhibition they conduct research into the themes anthropology and foreign cultures, whether or not fictional. They express themselves in drawings, sculptures, woodcuts, etchings and more.

Dirk Comello

After graduating in 2010, Dirk Comello won the Fiep Westendorp Stimulation Prize in 2013. Since then, Dirk has been working on an illustrated manual for himself. His work is a form of introspection for him. But actually for Dirk Comello everything is suitable as a subject to use for his work. His predilection for the grotesque and strange, however, is also very characteristic of his way of working. For example, he draws a lot of inspiration from ancient civilizations. "The more you delve into it, the more alive these dead societies become", says Dirk.
Bruce Naumann said: "The true artist helps the world by revealing mystic truths". Dirk Comello is precisely the opposite of this true artist described by Nauman: Dirk likes to hide more than to open up.

Wim Kamphuis

Hermit? Collector? Both can be applied to him, but above all Wim is an artist.
The apartment of Wim Kamphuis is completely packed with masks and images from faraway places, a beautiful warehouse of ethnographics. Wim says about some of his collection items: "These masks have to meet their symbolic requirements, otherwise it has no sense: those objects are real art, nameless art." His house is the window on the world for Wim Kamphuis, he calls this house full of primal art, this enclave, this marvelous world of living: "Enschedistan." His artwork is a reflection of this collection and source of inspiration.

The opening in presence of the artists will take place on Thursday 11 January 2018 at 5 pm.
The opening will be accompanied by the artists Paul Hajenius and Peter Geerts.
