BMS Learning Community on AI in Education

The past few years have made it clear: AI is here to stay. More importantly, it’s already reshaping higher education — from how we assess students, to how they learn and interact in the classroom, and how educators design their courses.

This Professional Learning Community (PLC) brings together BMS educators who want to explore the impact of AI on education and experiment with it in a collaborative setting. This is a space to learn with and from colleagues, supported by an educational consultant from CELT / the BMS Teaching Academy with expertise in AI in education.

No prior knowledge or experience is required. Participants are expected to be able to attend meetings and actively engage in the sessions as well as any preparatory activities required.

📌 KEY INFORMATION AT A GLANCE

  • Kick-off meeting: 22 September 12:30-13:30
  • Recurring meetings: First Monday of every month during lunch break (12:30-13:30)
  • Duration: September to February, with the possibility of prolonging if requested by participants
  • Target group: BMS teachers interested in AI in education
  • Focus: Determined collaboratively during the kick-off
  • Expectations of participants: Attend meetings, contribute to activities, prepare for meetings
  • Participant number: There is no cap but a minimum of 6 sign-ups is required to start the PLC. If numerous people sign up and have different interests related to AI in education, we will consider splitting into different groups
  • When?

The PLC will last from September to February, with the possibility of prolonging the PLC if requested by participants.

We’ll meet monthly on the first Monday of the month during lunch break, except for the kick-off session in September, which will take place on Sep 22 from 12:30 to 13:30.

  • What are the goals of the PLC?

The PLC is shaped by its participants. During the kick-off session, we’ll co-define the key topics and goals for the year. Examples of possible themes include:

    • Designing AI-resilient assessment
    • Fostering AI literacy in students
    • Embedding AI tools into group or project work
    • Using generative AI to create teaching materials

If multiple interest areas emerge, we’ll support the creation of smaller work groups around specific themes.

  • What kinds of activities will we engage in?

Together, we’ll create a plan that matches participants’ goals and experience levels. Typical PLC activities may include:

    1. Reviewing key concepts and practices from the literature
    2. Analysing real-life educational cases
    3. Experimenting with innovations in your own teaching and sharing experiences with peers
  • What are the outputs of the PLC?

By participating in the PLC, you’ll grow professionally, develop concrete ideas for your teaching, and contribute to solving practical educational challenges.

We also aim to share the knowledge generated with the broader BMS community. Possible forms of dissemination include:

    • poster market at the end of the PLC to showcase innovations
    • collection of good practices to be shared with programmes
    • lunch meeting for all BMS teachers to present and discuss outcomes
  • Who can join?

    Any BMS teacher who:

    • Is interested in exploring the impact of AI on education
    • Can commit to joining PLC meetings
    • Is willing to take an active role in meetings and any preparatory work needed

No prior experience with AI is required.

  • What is expected of me as a participant?

The PLC is a form of participant-led learning. Please, only sign up for this PLC if you are committed to attending most sessions.

Moreover, you are expected to actively contribute to discussions, engage in selected activities, and help shape the direction of the group.

  • What can I expect from the facilitator?

The facilitator supports the group by:

    • Helping define shared goals and a meeting plan
    • Organising and moderating the sessions
    • Contributing current UT and CELT knowledge on AI in education
    • Bringing in guest experts when needed
    • Supporting you in developing concrete innovations
