This research project investigates the effectiveness of a series of ‘lessons’ on preschool children’s literacy and digital literacy skills development. The participants are 5-6 years old children in public schools in Indonesia. The lesson series design is a blend of storytelling and Gagné’s events of instruction. A storytelling approach is used because it fits a natural way of learning for these young children. The structure of the events brings systematicity in the lessons. Three empirical studies compare two experimental conditions (i.e., storytelling and digital storytelling) with a control condition (i.e., regular literacy lessons). The findings from two completed experiments show that the new lesson series significantly and strongly raised the children’s literacy and digital literacy skills in comparison to the regular lessons.
