Internship Assignment: Data Collection for E-Waste Concept Map Study
Background
We're investigating how students understand complex socio-scientific issues, using e-waste as our case study. E-waste is an interesting topic because it touches on environmental, economic, social, and technological aspects. We want to know how students in higher education think about this issue, and particularly whether students from different fields (like engineering versus social sciences) conceptualize it differently.
Students participate by making a concept map about e-waste in GoLab, an online learning environment. The system logs everything, which lets us analyze the depth, breadth, and organization of their thinking about e-waste.
What you'll be doing
Your main job is helping us collect data. This means finding participants - students in higher education, mainly here at UT but also at other Dutch universities and colleges. You'll reach out to students and student groups, explain what we're asking them to do, and get them to participate by completing the concept map in GoLab.
After students finish their concept maps, you'll retrieve the logged data from the system. Once we have a good amount of data, you'll help with the first exploration using Atlas.ti - things like getting the data organized and doing initial coding under our supervision.
Who you'll work with
You'll work with Hannie Gijlers. The team at the department will show you how to get the data out of GoLab, and work together on the first analysis of the data potentially using Atlas.ti .
