UT and partners receive 1.6 million for faster sustainability of buildings

NWO-KIC call awards funding for the rapid sustainability of buildings and ensures that the available capacity is better deployed. Four awarded projects include data governance, virtual reality and digital models. The UT (ET), Saxion University of Applied Sciences and Hanze University of Applied Sciences received an award of 1.6 million euros for sustainability in the construction industry for the project 'PRE-MADONA: PREparing mass ModulAr Digital ONsite renovation' led by Andre Dorée.

Making the built environment more sustainable is vital to reducing energy consumption. However, the current capacity to perform the necessary energy renovations is insufficient. Innovative digital solutions aimed at optimising and increasing capacity contribute to the necessary changes, such as replacing human labour and standardisation. This call aims to develop innovative digital solutions to accelerate energy renovations and thus make the existing built environment more sustainable.

To ensure a good connection with practice, private parties are involved in the four projects that are now starting. They also contribute financially to the projects. In total, 2.4 million euros in co-funding has been raised on top of the NWO funding of 5.3 million euros.

PRE-MADONA: PREparing mass ModulAr Digital ONsite renovation

PRE-MADONA is a multidisciplinary project involving 11 partners, designed to enable and accelerate mass-scale building renovations. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies like digital twins and machine learning, we tackle data and digitalisation problems that impede scaling up from a single building to mass-scale renovation. We aim to create a data-driven ecosystem that optimises every stage of the renovation process, from design to permitting and execution. This innovative approach will not only consider building owners but also critical dependencies between these stakeholders and energy infrastructure providers. To co-create the ecosystem, we work toward a future-proof, digitally-enabled transition of energy renovations.

Consortium partners: DigiGO, Enexis, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Municipality of Enschede, Nijhuis Bouw BV, Roeloefs Groep, Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Siers Groep, Stichting Pioneering, TNO, TwinTopics, Verhoeven Vastgoedverbeteraars, WoON Twente

NWO-KIC: innovation programmes in the knowledge and innovation covenant

NWO develops innovation programmes that focus on societal challenges in the Netherlands. These programmes aim to have an impact on the economy, people and society. The focus is on cooperation between knowledge institutions, private parties and the government. The results thus contribute to the realisation of economic opportunities. It is therefore essential that companies invest in every research project.
