Testimonial Heni

Name: heni
Country of origin: Indonesia
Programme: MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (mSC)

Hi everyone! My name is Heni Ju and I am currently a first-year MSc student of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Twente. I was born and raised on a small island in Indonesia called Batam. Before coming to Enschede, I studied for almost 1.5 years in Singapore and graduated with a diploma in Economics from the University of London. I realized that I was not very happy with what I was studying and decided to change my major. This leads to the beginning of my beautiful journey to the University of Twente. I have always had a strong passion for mathematics and science since I was in primary school. Engineering seems to be the best way to combine the fundamentals of logical and analytical aspects of these subjects and you can relate these to everything in life. The idea of designing something and to have the opportunity to make real differences attracted me to choose this study.

Why University of Twente?

I have always had a desire to study abroad. I believe that studying abroad will be a highly rewarding experience that will benefit my career and personal development. Europe was my first choice to study abroad and I narrowed it down to a few countries including the Netherlands. The Netherlands was my top choice because it is known for its globally-recognised technical degrees and many options for English-taught programs. I chose UT because it is ranked highly and world-known for its technical studies. Besides that, UT is ranked third of all universities in the Netherlands by the National Student Survey (NSE). UT also has a well designed technical program with a strong focus on practical applications, interdisciplinary collaboration with other technical studies and excellent career opportunities. I was lucky enough because it was the first year of the English-taught Bachelor's in Mechanical engineering from UT when I first applied and now already being enrolled at the MSc Mechanical Engineering.

As I mentioned before, UT programs are also known for its practical application. For every module, we work on a real-life practical problem with a project team. So, not only I gain knowledge of scientific theory, this programme also helps me grow personally and professionally. Every project helped me build my confidence in working as a team and in problem solving. The other things that I love about UT are its beautiful green campus and the atmosphere between students and teachers. You can always bike or walk around the beautiful campus and enjoy the greenery and stunning nature. The campus also has everything you need from Starbucks, supermarket, library, many places to study inside/outside, high-speed internet facility, gym, swimming pool and other sports facilities. And if you are interested, you can also get to live on campus!

Living in the Netherlands

Studying at the University of Twente has been the best decision that I ever made. Not only experiencing a high standard of education, I have made beautiful friendships with people from different countries and backgrounds. I am having a great time living in Enschede as an international student. It is a very safe and lovely town with all the facilities you need and a very nice city centre where you can find shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. The people here are also friendly and laid-back. It is also only a few minutes bike away from Germany, two hours by train to Amsterdam or you can always travel to other European countries whenever you have the time. Enschede is also home to a lot of internationals and there are many communities from different countries. Especially for Indonesians like me, there is quite a big community for Indonesian people and an Indonesian student association (PPIE) that always throws events every year to make you feel more at home. All in all, I am very happy with my study program and I am very glad that I have the opportunity to study at the University of Twente!
