The most obvious application for upright imaging is in orthopedics. Several musculoskeletal parameters are estimated more correctly in a weight-bearing position. Next to that the lowered field of the 0.25T scanner should reduce metal artifacts generated by prostheses and reduce the safety risks. Finally, imaging the changes in anatomy due to different postures might be valuable input for mechanical models that are being developed by the Biomechanics group of Nico Verdonschot of the UT. Several clinical studies on this field have already been performed in collaboration with the Orthopedic Center Oost-Nederland. Next to that, we’re currently in the process of starting up a new study with the Rheumatology department of the UMC Utrecht.
