Professor Hans Hilgenkamp appointed as Interim Dean of TNW

The Executive Board has appointed Prof.dr.ir. Hans Hilgenkamp (46) as Interim Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW) as of 1 February. He succeeds Prof.dr. Gerard van der Steenhoven, who has been appointed as the new Director of the Royal Netherlands Institute of Meteorology (KNMI).

Professor Hilgenkamp started his career at the University of Twente in 1999 as Assistant Professor. In 2005, he was appointed as Professor at the former Faculty of Applied Physics. His chair ‘Interfaces and Correlated Electron Systems’, part of the MESA + Institute for Nanotechnology, focuses primarily on research into materials with special electronic properties such as superconductivity. Since 2009, he also is parttime Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Leiden. In addition, Hilgenkamp is Visiting Professor at the National University of Singapore. As of 2012 he is Chairman of the research discipline ‘Applied Physics’ within the Faculty of Science and Technology.

As Programme Director of a national consortium of research groups, Hilgenkamp recently received a grant of €2.9 million by the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM). The funding is intended to support the research programme ‘Conductive interfaces in insulating oxides’. In 2008, Hilgenkamp received a 'VICI' grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) for research on Mott materials. As a member of the KNAW’s Young Academy (2005-2010), he was one of the founders of the Global Young Academy. At the Opening of the Academic Year in 2007, he was awarded the Education Prize of the University of Twente, which is presented each year to the best teacher of the UT.

The Board wishes Hilgenkamp all the success as acting Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
