In-situ characterization

In-situ and operando membrane (film) characterization

Development of membrane technology generally relies on empirical relations between performance, process conditions, and membrane materials. In this, for instance the effects of intrinsic materials properties, length scale, time scale, support effects, etc., are convoluted. We aim to deconvolute these effects by studying in detail, directly, the properties of thin membrane films, under relevant conditions. Typical studies focus on the evolution of the refractive index and thickness of a thin film upon exposure to a penetrant. From this, the mechanism and dynamics of sorption can be derived, relaxations of the membrane material can be determined, and physical aging can be studied.
